Some Aphorisms
The Bible Study group has been working through the Book of Sirach, full of apothegms and aphorisms. Fr. Morgan Silbaugh has reminded us that the folk widome contained therein can at times be contradictory: HE WHO HESITATES IS LOST vs. LOOK BEFORE YOU LEAP.
As members of the parish receive their Covid-19 vaccines and there is a hope of the light of normality at the end of the dark tunnel, I have been thinking a lot about growing light and the lengthening of days in the Springtime. On occasion, different aphorisms I have heard over the years have come to mind. Here are a few. Many are attributed to multiple people, so I repeat them here without attribution:
Do not use the Bible to tell you what love means. Use love to tell you what the Bible means.
Standing up for our rights can only hurt us and others if we cannot first bow under and shoulder up our responsibilities.
There can be no peace until the power of love overcomes the love of power.
Following Jesus is more important than worshipping him.
Standing on principles often keeps us from standing with others.
Patriotism is the last refuge of scoundrels.
The Bible says? And what else does the Bible say?
Faith brings us closer together. When used as a stick, it stops being faith.
We often blame others for the faults that are in fact ours alone.
The Bible is not so much a guide for correct answers, as for useful questions.
